About Sciton Profractional Erbium

Overview
In contrast to full field resurfacing that completely removes the surface area of a treatment site, ProFractional erbium laser creates narrow-diameter channels in the skin, covering only a fraction of the total treatment area. This process triggers the body’s wound healing response while preserving the surrounding tissue for quick healing. ProFractional is able to achieve varying depths allowing for more intense treatments if needed. Along with having larger treatment spot sizes allowing for quicker treatment speeds.

The ProFractional predefined densities feature array patterns that involve random placement and sequence of energy deposition, which can decrease discomfort during treatment and enhance overall comfort.
Advantages

Good candidates for this treatment may include those with:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles: The Profractional Laser can smooth out wrinkles and reduce the signs of aging.
  • Acne scars or other types of scars: The laser’s precise delivery can help diminish the appearance of scars, including acne scars.
  • Uneven skin tone or texture: Whether you have rough texture, enlarged pores, or pigmentation issues, the Profractional Laser can help even out your skin.
  • Sun damage or age spots: If you have sunspots, freckles, or other signs of sun damage, this treatment can effectively target and lighten them.
  • Stretch marks: The Profractional Laser can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks by stimulating collagen remodeling and improving skin elasticity.
Pros
  • Versatility: The Profractional Laser addresses a wide range of skin concerns.
  • Effective results: Provides noticeable improvement in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.
  • Minimal downtime: Compared to traditional ablative lasers, the Profractional Laser has a shorter recovery period.
Cons
  • Multiple sessions: Depending on the severity of skin concerns, you may need several treatment sessions to achieve optimal results.
  • Side effects: As your skin heals, you may experience temporary redness, swelling, and peeling. These effects are typically well-tolerated and fade over time.
  • UV sensitivity: You must wear sunscreen and avoid excessive sun exposure to maintain results and protect your skin from damage.
What to Expect
ProFractional laser resurfacing is typically an outpatient procedure lasting 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the treatment area size and desired intensity.

Before the procedure, your provider administers local anesthesia to numb the area and may provide an oral sedative for relaxation. General anesthesia in some cases are used when paired with deeper treatments and other procedures, requiring transportation arrangements afterward.

During the procedure, the handheld laser device is moved across the treatment area, emitting a powerful beam of light in a grid-like pattern. Under general anesthesia, there’s no sensation. With local anesthesia, you may feel a snapping sensation.

Afterward, your skin is coated with ointment and dressings.
Recovery
Downtime varies from several days for fractional treatments to over two weeks for fully ablative ones. During this period, expect swelling, scabbing, and discomfort. You can manage pain with over-the-counter or prescribed medication.

To reduce swelling, use a combination of prescription steroids and ice packs, and elevate your head while sleeping. Follow your doctor’s cleansing and moisturizing instructions, possibly using medical-grade products they recommend.

Moisturize regularly to promote healthy skin turnover and prevent scabbing. After initial healing, expect pink skin for weeks. You can resume using makeup once the area fully heals.

When outdoors, protect your skin from the sun with SPF 30+ sunscreen to prevent damage to the delicate regenerated skin.
Results
Visible outcomes depend on treatment intensity and healing duration. Noticeable results typically appear after skin restoration and redness resolution, taking weeks for fractional treatments and months for fully ablative ones.

Clients see immediate improvements post-healing, but collagen-enhancing effects take a few months to develop as new cells and proteins form fully.

With proper skin care and sun protection, results can last several years. Regular hydration and antioxidant-rich products, along with high-SPF sunscreen, are recommended to prevent recurring damage.

However, skin aging is inevitable, necessitating ongoing maintenance. Continuous laser treatments or other rejuvenation therapies can help sustain results over time.
Safety Profile
Deeper erbium treatments pose some risks of burning and scarring. Healing is much quicker compared to CO2 lasers. Its important to adhere to strict post-treatment instructions, including cleansing and moisturizing, is crucial to minimize infection risk.

Superficial resurfacing treatments carry lesser risks but can still cause some potential issues for people with medium to deep skin tones. Following a doctor’s guidance is essential for healthy healing and infection prevention.

Those on Accutane therapy or within the last 6 months should also refrain from CO2 treatment due to impaired healing capabilities.

Inform your doctor of any history of cold sores so that you can receive antiviral medication before treatment to prevent flare-ups.

It is crucial for individuals with darker skin types to seek out a healthcare provider who possesses expertise in treating melanated skin.
Cost

The cost of an erbium laser skin resurfacing procedure typically ranges from $1,500 to $2,500. The final price of this treatment is determined by factors such as geographical location, healthcare provider, and the complexity and duration of the cosmetic procedure.
