Jowls refer to the sagging skin and flesh along the jawline, typically below the cheeks. Jowls can vary in severity, ranging from mild sagging to more noticeable drooping of the lower face, and are commonly associated with natural aging.
Causes of Jowls
Decreased collagen / elastin production
Collagen and elastin are proteins responsible for skin strength and structure, diminishes over time, contributing to jowl formation
Facial Fat Pads
The superficial fat pads become displaced and descend, increasing in weight, which ultimately contributes to the development of jowls and a double chin.
Genetic Predisposition
Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to developing jowls earlier in life.
Weakening Facial Muscles
Weakness or laxity in the facial muscles can contribute to developing jowls.
