Breast augmentation and lift

Clinical review pending · Editorial update 2026-09-04

Implants (silicone or saline) or fat transfer add volume; a lift raises and reshapes without adding much volume. Often combined.

How it works

Implants sit under the breast tissue or partly under the chest muscle, placed through an incision in the fold, around the areola or in the armpit. A lift removes skin and repositions the nipple.

Four illustrative steps. Select a step to highlight it; the optional anatomy view explains the same mechanism.

Recovery, in practical terms

A week off work, 4 to 6 weeks without heavy lifting.

What it can feel like: General anaesthesia.

What people discuss

Small or asymmetric breasts, deflation after pregnancy.

Reasons to pause

Unrealistic size goals, high anaesthetic risk.

This list is not exhaustive. A clinician must assess your health, medications, skin and goals.

Risks worth understanding

  • Capsular contracture
  • Rupture or rippling
  • A rare implant-associated lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) linked to certain textured implants
  • Reports of breast implant illness

Ask your clinician

  • Which implant type and placement, and why?
  • What is the plan for long-term monitoring?
