Unlike traditional tattoos, microblading uses smaller pigment particles applied superficially.
Medically reviewed by Dario Nuhanovic | Licensed Esthetician and Tattoo artist
Microblading is a form of semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that involves the application of pigment to the skin. Unlike traditional tattoos, which use concentrated tattoo ink and are placed into the deeper layers of the skin, microblading utilizes smaller pigment particles that are applied superficially. As a result, the body eventually metabolizes the pigment, causing it to fade over time.
Using different pigments and application techniques in microblading results in a softer and more subtle appearance compared to traditional tattoos, which tend to be opaque and bright.
Additionally, the pigment in microblading may lighten in color by a shade or two over time, in contrast to the blue-green tint that can develop in fading traditional tattoos.

The advantages of microblading can correct and reconstruct eyebrows, offering a solution for thinning or over-plucked brows. Microblading enhances the eyebrows, providing a natural and fuller look. It is a versatile procedure that can address various eyebrow concerns. Overall, microblading offers a convenient and effective way to achieve beautifully shaped eyebrows.

What to Expect
Avoid getting a chemical peel 60 days before the appointment.
Avoid certain neurotoxin treatments 14 days before.
Avoid taking ibuprofen, naproxen, vitamin E, fish oil, or blood thinners 14 days before.
Avoid tanning or sunburn seven days before.
Avoid using retinoids, anti-aging creams, serums with acids, plucking, or waxing eyebrows seven days before.
Avoid drinking alcohol 72-24 hours before.
Before undergoing the microblading procedure, you are advised to review any pre-care instructions and fill out medical history forms provided by your artist.
On the day of the appointment, the artist should discuss desired brow goals with the client, outline the shape that is being aimed for, and address any concerns the client may have before beginning the treatment. It is also common practice for the artist to take photos of the client’s brows for reference.
The microblading procedure itself is a meticulous process. The artist uses a tool to create tiny hairlike strokes in the skin, depositing pigment in various directions. This typically takes between 30 to 45 minutes, during which gel lidocaine is applied to ensure the area remains numb. To aid in the recovery process, a healing balm is then applied. This balm serves to soothe the skin and promote healing, ensuring a comfortable and effective recovery.
Recovery
Here are some general aftercare guidelines:
Please refrain from applying any makeup on the tattooed area for two weeks. Using cosmetics during this time may hinder the healing process and affect the color of your eyebrows.
Avoid intense sweating, gym activities, and working out for seven to 10 days following your procedure.
Avoid swimming for two weeks.
Abstain from tinting, bleaching, dyeing, or undergoing a brow lamination for four weeks after the procedure.
During the crucial healing process, it is vital to use a healing balm.
Avoid applying anti-acne products (benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, etc.) or lightening creams to the treated area while healing.
After 30 days, you may resume your regular skincare routine, including certain neurotoxins, fillers, and facial treatments.
If you plan to undergo laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed, you must inform the laser technician beforehand. These procedures can potentially alter the color of the tattooed area.
Results
The complete healing process spans four to six weeks, contingent upon the individual’s age and rate of regeneration. Throughout this healing cycle, the newly formed eyebrows will undergo various phases. Following the procedure, the pigment may initially exhibit an unnatural appearance, while on the subsequent day, the pigment’s color may appear significantly darker.
Microblading lasts one to three years.
