About TMJ Tox

Overview

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder involves dysfunction in the jaw joints, causing muscle spasms, swelling, and facial pain. Neurotoxin injections offer a contemporary treatment option to alleviate chronic discomfort associated with TMJ.

Advantages

Neurotoxin impedes nerve signals responsible for muscle contractions, inducing relaxation and mitigating TMJ symptoms such as jaw pain, facial muscle tenderness, and limited mouth movement. It provides an effective non-surgical treatment for TMJ disorder.

What to Expect

Your healthcare provider will inject neurotoxin into the jaw muscles near the temporomandibular joint to help relax them. This reduces tension, eases pain, and may improve jaw function and reduce muscle spasms.

They will typically target the masseter muscles and sometimes the temples, depending on your symptoms. In some cases, they may add more injection sites. The doctor will decide how many units you need, usually between 15 to 50 units per side.

You may feel a quick sting or pinch during the injection, similar to a bug bite. Some people notice slight improvement within a day or two, but full relief usually takes a few weeks.

Recovery

Most patients can return to their normal activities right after their TMJ toxin treatment.

It’s best to stay upright and avoid rubbing or massaging the injection sites for a few hours. This helps keep the toxin from spreading to other muscles.

Follow your provider’s specific aftercare instructions. You may need regular follow-up treatments to maintain the results.

Cost

The masseter muscle is a very large muscle and requires an appropriate amount of units to adequately treat. Typical treatment ranges from 15 units per side on the low end to 50 units per side. Costs will be specific to the cost of toxin units.
